Tiffin City Council and Coralville City Council
October 5, 1999
A joint meeting of the Tiffin City Council and Coralville City Council was brought to order by Mayor Jim Faussett, host official, at the Coralville City Chambers 7:00 p.m., October 5, 1999. Present: Coralville Mayor Jim Faussett, and Councilmembers: John Weihe, Henry Herwig, Diana Lundell, Jean Schnake, and David Jacoby, City Clerk Arlys Hannam and City Administrator Kelly Hayworth. Tiffin Mayor Glenn R. Potter, and Councilmembers: Mike Gericke, Jim Bartels, Fire Chief Tom Bigelow, Planning and Zoning Melvin Reeve and City Clerk Margaret B. Reihman.
Members discussed recent volunteer effort provided by the Tiffin Volunteer Fire Department to the City of Coralville for fire protection. Chief Tom Bigelow gave report on cooperative effort extended by his force. The Tiffin department is providing initial aid of one large pumper and a crew of five volunteers on an automatic aid call. At the outset there were some dispatch center glitches on the automatic aid and mutual aid calls. Those dispatch calls have been cleaned up and working smoothly now. Tom reported an 8.5-minute response for the department into Coralville. The rapid response time could be attributed to the lower number of stop signs that need to be negotiated when arriving from the west.
Coralville officials asked if there was anyway they could assist the department. Chief Bigelow replied that one three story building in Tiffin would require a ladder truck were there to be a fire. The remaining large buildings in Tiffin have installed water sprinklers on every floor required under new city ordinances. Mayor Potter credited safer city ordinances to the dedicated attention of Fire Chief Bigelow.
Coralville council officials indicated that at this time they expected Coralville to continue with volunteer fire effort for some indefinite period of time and that at present they did not have any land planned for municipal use in this (Tiffin) area.
Mayor Faussett indicated that with the commercialization of area along the borders of the two cities that we might want to get together and think of ourselves as one big community.
Tiffin Mayor Potter noted that the city of Tiffin is planning annexation along its southern boundary in the near future. Tiffin is currently in a new sewer project that has expansion capacity for meeting sewer needs of the area. The City has been working on plans for senior housing and possibility of a senior care center. Mayor Potter explained that planning efforts for senior care center growth in Iowa City and Coralville have stopped a care center project in Tiffin. Tiffin has lost an immediate donation of several acres of ground for this purpose with an immediate start time because of regional future planning.
