The purpose of the hearing is to receive citizen input concerning two proposals for a sewer rate increase.
Since the sewer system was established in 1964, the rate has been increased only once. On January 1, 1980 the rate went from $4.35 per unit per month to $5.25 per unit. Even though the population increased by 102 people in the last ten years, the revenues have not kept pace with the effect of high inflation on operating costs.
One proposal for rate increase is to raise each unit to $7.00 per month. In order to make the system more equitable, some users might need adjustments to the number of units currently being assessed.
The other proposal is to base the sewer fee on the actual water usage. Each customer would pay the same amount for sewer as for water. Therefore, large water users, would pay higher sewer fees.
Citizens are encouraged to attend the public hearing on September 9th. Councilmembers would appreciate suggestions.
