Minutes February 11, 1987 Hart reported that Department of Natural Resources requires that public be notified of radium level in excess of standards. Clerk will proceed with notifications. Hart has talked with USGS and found that all other wells in this area using the same aquifer have low radium levels. Oxford has a deeper well. City has one year to take action. Hart stated that by developing new well a larger ring of influence would be created and the level might be reduced that way. He obtained approval from DNR to wait until new well is in operation. Hart also reported that all samples analyzed in Des Moines have lower radium level than those analyzed by University Hygienic Lab in Iowa City. The first samples from the new well will have to be sent to Des Moines, anyway. Should know something by November. City is currently taking 9,000 to 10,000 gallons per day from shallow well. City's radium level is 8.4 pc's per liter and the DNR standard is 5 pc's per liter. Hart stated that a person is always being exposed to radiation. All water naturally has radium in it. The combined totals of background radiation and over 5 pc's per liter of radium in water could have some long term effects, unknown at this time. Council consensus to allow Hart to contact City of Wapello about used sander for back of pick-up truck. Motion Stoner second Stratton to approve clerk-treasurer's reports. Carried unanimously. Motion Stratton second Flansburg approve bills and accept receipts. Carried unanimously. Motion Stratton second Stoner to adjourn at 7:25 p.m. Carried unanimously. [Signature] GLENN R.
