These numbers allow for elected officials to compare basic police services against each other based upon both
total annual cost and price per officer. The budget example prepared for this report not only includes the
number of sworn personnel outlined in the table but also for an administrative assistant to assist with the day
to day operations and paperwork.
Similar to the Johnson County costing proposal, the table above encompasses all costs relative to employees
including health benefits, IPERS, technology, vehicles, etc. Also, like in the first table, these estimations do not
account for any office space for operations.
Copies of the full budget estimations may be found as an addendum to this report.
As mentioned earlier, many elected officials mentioned the depth of services available by contracting with the
Sheriff’s Office. While this is a factual statement, many of these services are rarely utilitized and thus the
value of these services may be weighed disproportianetly. Additionally, local control and having more direct
input into how the community is policed also has a value. This value is ultimately determined by the elected
officials and is relative based upon the value of the services being provided by the Sheriff’s Office.
