Darla Bartels- Spoke about how the Banks get bail outs, but wages have been stagnant for
30 years and believes that increasing the minimum wage will be a good thing for Tiffin.
Mark Clark- Potter St- Requests to increase the minimum wage as proposed by Johnson
County and what Iowa City has done.
Joy Ward- Potter St- Resident in Tiffin since 2006- 62 year old Vet with no kids, and works
as a part time employee for pay 2x the minimum wage. Because she is a Vet she doesn' t
have to pay health insurance and has no credit card debt, and has a 20 year old car. Even
with all this she still struggles to make ends meet. Explained her situation and believes that
the current wages are keeping people in the poverty level and everyone needs to be making
a living wage.
iNicole Upchurch- Request that we do not Opt Out and make sure we increase the minimum
wage. Nicole had spoken with the local businesses and spoke to both owners and workers to
hear feedback from them. She advised that when we help everyone, it helps the community,
and she wants to be in a community that wants to help everyone.
Miriam Aguilar- Love this community and feels at home, believes the CCA school district
is great district. Loves being in a town that cares about the community. She believes that
reducing the minimum wage will diminish the community. She requested that you have
respect for people. She advised City Council that " all you have to do is NOTHING to
allow this to take effect."
Russel Meade- CPA Practice since 1998- He advised that for many people this issue is an
income problem that will not be solved with minimum wage, instead we need to find ways
to help people move up. He did some calculations and figured that Daycare will be forced
to raise fees 15- 25% per month. Which will be passed onto customers. Spoke about the
exemption if a business makes less than $ 300k. which raises the issue of enforcement of the
law. He believes that government shouldn' t be picking winners & losers. He requests that
the City Council should opt out and focus on bring high quality and stables jobs to Tiffin.
Robin Clark -Bennet — Iowa City resident that visits Tiffin regularly- Volunteer at Center
for Worker Justice who fought at the County level. 8 years the minimum wage has not
increased and actually has fallen behind the cost of living. Provided council with 3 studies
showing the importance of a living wage.
