➢ The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is currently meeting the basic and primary needs of the Tiffin community.
➢ The City of Tiffin has enjoyed a minimal investment in law enforcement services as compared to other communities
of similar size and adjustments with significant increases will be necessary in future years as staff and needs grow.
➢ The creation and viability of an operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week police department is at least 2 years away
and realistically not viable for approximately 5 years when evaluating the costs associate with contracting with the
sheriff’s office as compared with creating a self sustaining police department.
➢ Tiffin’s future needs are extremely difficult to predict and will be based largely upon the growth and development of
the school district as well as the community itself.
➢ While this growth occurs, Tiffin is in good hands with Sheriff Kunkel and his staff providing services.
➢ This topic is worthy of further discussion in the future as the contracted dollars begin to more closely align with the
anticipated costs of having your own police department.
➢ The value of the having creating your own police department is hard to quantify, however having your own
department allows for more control by the City, provides an additional department head and staff to assist the city
with its growth and planning, and allows for greater flexibility with specific programs and areas.
