AGENDA INFORMATION
TIFFIN CITY COUNCIL COMMUNICATION
DATE: January 30, 2026
AGENDA ITEM: Discussion and Consideration of Replacement X-Ripper/Grinder (Vogelsang
XRC 100-480QD) for the City’s Wastewater Collection System
ACTION: Motion
Purpose
The purpose of this item is to present for City Council consideration a quote from Iowa Pump Works for
the replacement of the existing wastewater grinder (Vogelsang XRC 100-480QD) serving the City’s
wastewater collection system. The grinder is critical for reducing solids and protecting downstream
pumps and infrastructure from clogging and mechanical damage.
Background
The existing grinder, a Vogelsang XRC 100-480QD (SN: 13-02844), has reached the end of its useful
life and requires replacement. Failure of this unit would increase the risk of equipment downtime, pump
failures, sewer backups, and costly emergency repairs.
Iowa Pump Works has provided a formal quote for a complete replacement assembly, including the
X-Ripper grinder unit. The quote includes the equipment only and does not include freight. Lead time for
delivery is estimated at 5–7 weeks.
Fiscal Impact
The total cost to the City for the grinder assembly is $35,167.06, plus freight and any applicable taxes or
tariff surcharges. Funding would come from the wastewater enterprise budget or wastewater capital
improvement funds.
Staff Recommendation
Staff recommends approval of the Iowa Pump Works quote for the purchase of the Vogelsang
XRC100-480QD X-Ripper grinder assembly in the amount of $35,167.06, plus freight and applicable
surcharges. Approval is recommended. Replacing this equipment is essential for maintaining proper
operation of the wastewater system, preventing blockages, extending pump life, and avoiding the risk of
emergency failures.
