Assessment Center Policy
Objective of Assessment Center – To measure behaviors that mimic the competencies, attributes and
job performance skills that would be expected of a candidate to successfully fulfill the role of the Fire
Chief at Tiffin Fire Department.
Use of Data - Prior to the assessment, candidates will be informed on what decisions will be made with
the assessment center data post hoc. Any changes to these decisions will be clearly communicated to
the candidates by the assessment administrator.
Validation Support – Assessment center content is based upon the job description of the position that is
being tested for, and the expectations of how a typical workday might be experienced by that person.
• Scoring does not indicate a pass/fail decision matrix for the candidates being tested. Relative
comparisons among candidates indicate where they rank in collective scores of each category
assessed. This generates feedback for the decision-making process in selecting candidates.
Selections of Assessors – Selection of appropriate assessors is based on familiarity of the position being
assessed, possessing the following attributes:
• Should have a good working knowledge of the position, or closely related field of work.
• Demonstrate an ability to observe candidates in multiple areas of performance and record
behaviors using assessment tools.
• Have the ability to submit objective scoring consistently among all candidates.
• If assessors also serve as assessment administrators, they will fulfill this responsibility.
• Deliver feedback in clearly written notetaking as part of the assessment tools.
