Population Findings
• Rapid population increases since 1990. Tiffin has grown 713% between 1990 and 2017.
• Median age in 2010 is significantly younger than the state of Iowa (31.2 versus 38.1).
• Median age is anticipated to increase slightly as the largest age cohorts begin to shift near retirement age.
• The city’s population increase since 1990 is significantly higher than the average in the ECICOG region (8
percent). Tiffin was one of several communities experiencing substantial growth (double and triple digit
percentage growth rates) during this time.
• The population is expected to be near 4,900 residents when the next census (2020) is released.
• Tiffin should prepare for an estimated population of near 12,000 residents by the year 2030 or the
equivalent of approximately 10,000 new residents between 2010 and 2030. Housing, infrastructure and land
use needs throughout the plan will be based on this projection.
